A Note from Clay Sides

Backdoors and Breaches

I’m going to break a generally accepted rule and talk about what happened in Vegas!

Freshly back from the HIMSS ’25 show in Las Vegas, I feel renewed energy. Before you start to wonder, let me explain. I was working in the CloudWave booth this year, helping run a cybersecurity card game called Backdoors and Breaches (or B&B as some of us like to call it because of the 20-sided die involved.)

I was a little hesitant initially as getting someone to talk with you about anything for more than two minutes in your booth is a success. Getting people to spend ten minutes or more is absolutely encouraging!

Backdoors and Breaches represents a new approach to a tabletop exercise, commonly called “gamification.” While not as closely tailored as a complete tabletop, the gamification of an incident response exercise, coupled with critical thinking, turns a routine task into something fun.

Those of us running the game at the tables conducted cybersecurity scenarios with participants who enjoyed defending their imaginary healthcare organizations using “Procedures” and even periodically triggering “Injects.” People were actually having fun while exercising critical thinking skills and learning how to uncover, identify, and “stop” incursions! Discussions were fostered with questions such as, “Do we have the skills to do X?” or “Do our current procedures tell our staff what tools to use?” It was a revelation.

During your next tabletop exercise, ask yourselves, “Are we getting the engagement we need?” If the answer is no, let’s talk about how to improve your experience. CloudWave offers tabletop exercises for healthcare teams large and small. After all, your security posture should never be a game.

Clay Sides is Senior Technical Principal for CloudWave.

HIMSS25 in Las Vegas Recap

CloudWave changed things up at HIMSS25 in Las Vegas this year.

Using the Backdoors & Breaches card game, CloudWave’s Clay Sides, Johnathan Buice, and Leo Maguire led interested attendees through brief cybersecurity tabletop exercises.

Designed to test a player’s incident response knowledge and cyber security strategies, the Backdoors & Breaches card game captivated visitors as they battled simulated cyber incidents based on real-world situations.

The game sharpens response skills while offering a deeper understanding of modern cyber attackers’ techniques.

Our visitors not only had fun but learned valuable information and walked away with a deck that they could take back to educate their teams.

Customer Appreciation Reception

At the end of the first day of HIMSS25, CloudWave, with the support of our friends at AMD and EVT, hosted customers in the CloudWave booth for appetizers and cocktails.

Attendees remained engaged in ongoing Backdoors & Breaches games while customers, both old and new socialized and caught up while resting tired feet.

Many thanks to our friends at AMD and EVT for co-sponsoring a successful and enjoyable customer appreciation reception in Las Vegas.

Meet David Tilley

Senior Solution Architect

Many CloudWave employees have spent their careers in healthcare IT.

As a Senior Solution Architect for CloudWave, David Tilley helps healthcare organizations improve their IT systems, especially for electronic health records (EHRs) and data security.

“I collaborate and work closely with Healthcare IT teams to learn about their challenges and tailor solutions to fit specific needs.”

With a BS in Computer Science from Northwest Missouri State University, David is seeking a Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity from Missouri State University. He began his career as a hardware tech at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, MO, where he then became a network administrator and, eventually, an IT operations manager.

While at Citizens, David participated in the initial rollout of their EMR.

He explained that one of the stated goals was to deliver patient data to providers securely and accurately, and when needed, to improve patient outcomes and experiences and scale with the growing demands of healthcare.

“The two years I watched the EMR develop from something nonexistent to becoming completely paperless only underscored how important IT would be to healthcare in the future.”

He explained that it took an additional decade of working at Citizens to realize that he needed to share everything he learned there with as many healthcare organizations as possible.

“CloudWave was a perfect opportunity for me to work with as many hospitals as possible and to help them modernize their IT infrastructure.”

After 12 years with Citizens, he joined CloudWave as a Sales Engineer and eventually became a Solution Architect.

Outside of work, David enjoys spending quality time with his family, whether taking weekend trips or relaxing. He’s restoring his 1959 Ford F100 pickup truck and plays guitar. Fishing is one of his favorite ways to connect with nature.

After 23 years, what does David like most about working in healthcare?

“Every day, I have the opportunity to contribute to improving patient outcomes. This sense of purpose is the driving force that makes the work incredibly fulfilling.”
