A Note from Jacob Wheeler

Modern EDR in Healthcare

It’s been a busy few months; there hasn’t been the summer lull as in years past. I’ve been travelling a lot, meeting with healthcare organizations that have suffered recent security incidents or hospitals doing their best to make sure they aren’t next. Whether I’m in a small clinic in rural America or a massive hospital network in Europe, the details might differ, but the core issues remain the same. The conversation always seems to come back to the endpoint. It’s the front door, the weakest link, the most exploited entry point for cyberattacks. It’s also our greatest opportunity to build a meaningful defensive strategy.

The traditional perimeter has vanished with the influx of connected medical devices and personal gadgets. Our new reality requires a different approach to endpoint alerting and response. Too many organizations are still using off-the-shelf, untuned endpoint protection policies, resulting in far too many false positives or, worse, false negatives. Many clinical workflows include behaviors that are difficult to distinguish from threat actors without proper context and tuning. Yet, in an effort to fight alert fatigue, we’ve seen organizations with an overzealous approach to whitelisting, leaving themselves dangerously unprotected.

We need to protect endpoints with modern EDR platforms, but the protection is only as good as our implementation. We need to tune policies to reduce the white noise, but in a granular, contextually aware approach as to not miss actual alerts.

Stay tuned to CloudWave announcements over the next of weeks; we want to help!
