A Note from Erik Littlejohn
Reflections on 2023
I feel like I always get invited to write the newsletter introduction in January, but I somehow managed to avoid that fate (at least I hope I don’t have to write back-to-back intros). Now, you can all be spared my thoughts on New Year’s resolutions and prognostications for the year ahead. Instead, I’ll reflect a bit on the past year and narrow my look forward to a much shorter timeframe.
The past year has been marked by a lot of uncertainty for many of us, driven in large part by macroeconomic trends that impacted many organizations’ ability to proceed with necessary projects, infrastructure refreshes, or other investments.
We’ve all had to continually adapt in so many different and unanticipated ways over the past three years, perhaps more so in the healthcare sector than any other. Kudos and appreciation to all our customers, clinicians, and partners for continually adjusting to dynamic and evolving challenges.
As I returned from AWS re:Invent last week, I also reflected on how much energy and attention we’ve spent on the topic of AI over the past year. Like many people, I’ve been skeptical about how quick and impactful the adoption of AI will be in our industry. Is it the next Internet of Things? Blockchain or another over-hyped trend or fad (yes, both are alive and well, but not meeting the levels of hype I recall)? I tend to think not, but I promised to avoid long-term prognostications. What I think all of us should be doing with respect to AI is thinking about how we will leverage our data to take advantage of large language models, hyper-scaled compute capabilities, and other innovations that AI will bring to bear. Data is one of the most critical competitive advantages any organization will have in the coming years.
To that end, CloudWave will leverage AI developments to bring benefits to our customers smartly and safely. In a similar fashion, we’ll look to partner with organizations that can help accelerate advantages and capabilities for our customers. One of those partners is Dedalus, which most people in the U.S. and Canada might not know a lot about despite being one of the largest healthcare software companies in the world. However, they are not looking to serve the U.S. by competing with MEDITECH or Epic in the EHR space. Dedalus is looking to provide point solutions that leverage their interoperability capabilities for things like improving operating room utilization and content management. However, what we’re most excited about is the potential of their Trials for Care solution, which hospitals and health systems can use to match patients with clinical trials. It is a great win-win for patients and hospitals, and we’re excited to launch this offering in 2024. Stay tuned and see below for more details.
I wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year!

Meet Laura Pursley
Marketing Director
Many CloudWave employees have spent their careers in healthcare IT.
Football may be in the spotlight this year in Michigan, but CloudWave Marketing Director Laura Pursley is ready to move on to basketball season. A graduate of Michigan State, she is a huge fan of all things Spartan.
Laura’s marketing career started immediately after graduation, but for the last thirteen years, she has been marketing healthcare IT solutions, most recently cybersecurity solutions at Sensato and now CloudWave.
“My early background wasn’t in healthcare IT, but given the opportunity to join a company in this market, I soon realized that it is a community and industry like no other. I have met the most amazing people throughout my years working in healthcare IT marketing.”
As the Marketing Director for CloudWave’s Cybersecurity Solutions, Laura stays current with what’s happening in healthcare cybersecurity so she can create content for brochures, videos, blog articles, and other marketing collateral to communicate how hospitals can evolve their cybersecurity strategies.
“The healthcare industry is such a high target for attackers that healthcare organizations need to evolve to continually stay one step ahead of them.”
Laura also creates a lot of educational content to help hospitals train their teams and stay in the know about the latest threats and how they can work to stop attackers.
When Laura isn’t watching MSU sports, she’s watching her kids play lacrosse, basketball, football and perform gymnastics. She enjoys working out, running, and playing with her dog, Elvis.
“Elvis Pursley, get it?” she jokes.
What does Laura like most about working in health care?
“Even though I am not on the front lines (I could never do what our caregivers do), I feel like the technology solutions that we provide still positively impact patient care and sometimes could even save lives.”
Wishing you Happy Holidays from CloudWave
