A Note from Tim Quigley

Get The Best Fit With A Multi-Cloud Approach

Over the summer, I had a number of conversations with customers who asked about our approach to the cloud. Given the name of our company, I think people have preconceived notions about our approach to delivering services. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to lay out our approach to the cloud and how that drives the work we do.

As someone six foot five inches tall, I know that one of the world’s great lies is “one-size-fits-all.”

For me, this is true in clothing (especially hats), and it is also true for the cloud. That is why, at CloudWave, we believe in a multi-cloud approach. We know that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for our customers.

In our experience, healthcare providers have widely divergent computing needs in terms of workloads while also having extremely constrained budgets. Therefore, an approach based on moving everything to the public cloud (i.e., AWS, Azure, etc.) doesn’t meet the needs of most hospitals. Conversely, keeping everything in an on-premises data center generally isn’t the most cost-effective answer either.

At CloudWave, we work to provide solutions across the spectrum of public, private, and cloud-edge environments and work with our customers to determine the best model and location for your workload based on 1) technology needs with a focus on performance and latency, 2) regulatory requirements, and 3) total financial cost inclusive of all fees especially egress fees.

You may not realize this, but on a regular basis, we test to see if the platforms we host in our private cloud can be moved cost-effectively to the public cloud to save you money. To date, most of what we have evaluated has failed the test, and therefore, we continue to utilize a private cloud delivery model heavily. Additionally, we regularly find customers who, due to existing investments in data centers or limitations of their regional telecommunication infrastructure or power grid, need an on-premises solution, which is why we continue to provide data center hardware and our OpSus Edge solution.

We have found the public cloud to be an excellent option for cloud-native applications, including our own Nightingale security platform, and we also find it very useful for backup and recovery. That is why we utilize the public cloud extensively for these purposes.

I hope this helps you gain a better understanding of CloudWave’s approach to cloud computing. Please feel free to contact me directly at tquigley@gocloudwave.com if you have any questions. I hope to get a chance to see all of you at the MEDITECH Live conference next week, and at the Welcome Reception we are hosting at The Harp at Patriot Place.

Best regards,
Tim

Meet John Lyons
Senior Principal Solution Architect & Senior Engineer

Many CloudWave employees have spent their careers in healthcare IT.

John Lyons plays a dual role at CloudWave. As a Senior Principal Solution Architect and a Senior Engineer, John is involved in designing major technology initiatives for clients. Also, as an engineer, he assists with delivering strategic customer deployments.

“I get great satisfaction with solving customer problems,” he shared. “I love customers’ reactions when CloudWave implements cutting-edge solutions.”

John graduated from Central Connecticut University with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Sociology and minoring in Criminal Justice. While at Central Connecticut, John was a 4-year starter center for the Central Connecticut Blue Devils football team and captain during his senior year. After college, he worked as a social worker.

In 1998, he began a career in healthcare at Saints Memorial, now Lowell General in Lowell, Massachusetts, a MEDITECH hospital.

“During this time, I met and worked with Matt and Mike Donahue and their mother, who was the CIO.”

When Saints Memorial’s vendor, JJWild, was looking to expand their technical consulting group, John had the opportunity to join them in 2003.

John recently transitioned his family from Boston to Florida. He has two daughters; one recently graduated from UMass Boston and works in healthcare; another daughter is a sophomore at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, majoring in Nutrition. John is an avid Boston sports fan who enjoys fishing and playing golf.

What does John like most about working in health care?

“I enjoy working with healthcare leaders to identify and reduce substantial risk in their IT department.”
