A Note from Tina Brown
The Return to Cross-Functional Engineering to Better Serve Our Valued Customers
In the early days of enterprise computing, healthcare IT professionals were generalists. A single person might manage mainframe operations, program applications, handle user support, and maintain network connections. This model was possible because the technology landscape, while complex, was more contained.
As technology exploded in complexity through the 1990s and 2000s, specialization became essential. The emergence of the internet, client-server architectures, relational databases, enterprise applications, and later cloud computing created technology stacks so deep and wide that no single person could master them all. Healthcare IT organizations responded by creating specialized teams: database administrators, network engineers, application developers, security specialists, and infrastructure teams.
As cyclical patterns of industry change have routinely shown us, what was once old will often become reinvented, and new again. At CloudWave, in April 2025, our pendulum in healthcare IT organizational design swung back to having a cross-functional team to service our customers, specifically by the establishment of a Level 3 engineering team dedicated to the support of customer issues and request fulfillment. This change represented a fundamental reimagining of how technical expertise needed to be organized to better service our customers, and quite frankly, transpired because of direct feedback from customers on their support experiences.
With this change, CloudWave has not abandoned specialization but rather created a hybrid model. Our cross-functional Level 3 engineering team now handles the majority of customer-facing issues and requests, while specialized Level 3 engineering teams focus on projects, architecture implementations, infrastructure management, and provide specialized technology support. In developing this hybrid structure, our aim was to create a filtering mechanism where customers receive improved support for issue turnaround and request fulfillment while maintaining specialized technology engineering divisions for service delivery.
The establishment of this cross-functional Level 3 engineering team represents more than just an organizational change at CloudWave – it is a recognition of our customers, their direct feedback, and, as a result, the execution of changes we knew we needed to make to deliver improved support of our customers today, and into the future.
